Lent 2025
This year we are walking through Lent with our West Allis cohort churches as a sign of our commitment to work together. The Gospel of Luke is our guide. We begin with Jesus setting his face toward Jerusalem (Luke 9:51), then flow through several familiar stories—the Good Samaritan, Mary and Martha, the fruitless fig tree, the Lost Sheep, Zacchaeus, and more. These stories are significant in various venues: sacred stories, pop culture, church history, politics, and everything in between.
As we study these scriptures, we will see how Jesus was involved in the real life of the society in which he lives. In many ways, Jesus’ ministry disrupted the established social, political, and religious divides of his time. Jesus intentionally pointed out cultural and political extremes to emphasize the radical, inclusive, and surprising love of God. As we study these stories in their historical and cultural contexts, we can see how the biblical stories mirror our stories including the divisions many of us experience in our families, churches, and communities today. Indeed, the biblical stories are relevant to us 21st century people.
The theme, “Everything In Between (Meeting God in the midst of extremes)” invites us to navigate through the polarities in our lives with more faith, intention, and openness to be transformed. Each weekly sub-theme will explore two supposed binaries (sides), such as “faith & works” or “rest & growth,” or “grief & hope.” Remember we are a both/and people. Where ideas are often considered to be opposing, we look at how they are not so black and white. As we explore these concepts within the scriptures, we will see how these divisions are false. There are subtle differences and complexities. We might begin to see a full spectrum instead of just black and white. We might find that God is present in between.
This Lent you are invited to look beyond black and white polarities and easy answers. Certainly notice the differences that define our live but don’t stop there. Imagine where God is present, where God is meeting us beyond the categories we have created. Come journey together trusting that God shows up in shades of gray, rainbow hues, and everywhere in between.
